About the Training

This training course will start with an introduction to Children’s Hearings, including why they exist, who attends them, and why a child or young person might enter the children’s hearing system. We will then look in more detail at the grounds of referral court process, the types of orders that the Children’s Hearing can make, the criteria for secure care, and appeals.

This training is open to all but will be particularly useful to frontline workers who support care experienced children and young people. This course will provide a good introduction to Children's Hearings and is also suitable for those who have some experience of Children's Hearings and would like to improve their knowledge and understanding. The training is also suitable for trainee solicitors.

At the end of this training you will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of Children’s Hearings
  • Feel able to support a child or young person who is attending a children’s hearing
  • Be able to identify when a child or young person might need a lawyer at a children’s hearing.

About the Trainers

Sarah Bannerman and Chris Yule are lawyers at Clan Childlaw. They both represent children and young people in Children’s Hearings on a daily basis. Chris joined Clan Childlaw in 2020 and previously worked in a busy Edinburgh law firm where he regularly represented clients in court and Children's Hearings. Before joining Clan Childlaw in July 2019, Sarah worked as a family solicitor where she gained experience of navigating the children’s hearing system.


This interactive lawyer-led training session is £70 per person. The training will take place on Zoom and spaces are limited to allow for interaction and discussion.
