Our Helpline

How it works

Our free helpline is there if you need to know about a child or young person’s rights or how the law affects a child or young person.

Who is our helpline for?

  • Our helpline is there for Children and Young People – under the age of 26.
  •  Any adult who is supporting a child or young person with a question about or a problem with their rights or the law. That can include parents or family members, carers, advocacy workers, support workers, teachers, lawyers and social workers.

Clan legal services are for children and young people. We cannot give information to adults who are looking for legal advice for themselves, even if the legal issue involves a child.

If you are an adult who needs legal help with an issue involving a child, you can call the Law Society of Scotland for guidance on how to get legal advice on 0131 226 7411.

How to contact us.

The helpline is open Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

You can contact the helpline by calling us on

You can use email or the online form to ask for a call back.

If our helpline is busy you can leave us a message and one of our team will call you back.  Sometimes we have to close our helpline because of things like public holidays or staff training days. Here’s a note of the upcoming dates our service won’t be available:

  • From 3pm on 12th of June 2024
  • 14th of June 2024
  • 11th of September 2024
  • 6th of December 2024
  • 25th & 26th December 2024
  • 1st & 2nd January 2025

Our helpline isn’t always able to give urgent legal advice or get you a lawyer straight away.  Where we are unable to help we will signpost you to services that may be better placed to support you.

If you think you need to get a lawyer straight away then you can find a solicitor by visiting the Law Society for Scotland website.

What happens when I contact the helpline?

On the call we will

  • Ask a few questions to work out what help you need and how quickly you need help.
  • If you need information about children’s rights and the law then you will speak to one of our legal team and they will give you free, confidential, reliable information and up-to-date guidance about your situation
  • If there is another advice service or legal service that is better placed to provide you with information and help we will provide you with their contact details. This is called signposting.

When you contact us by email or by using the form on our website, we will respond we will usually email you, unless you have requested a call. It’s helpful if you tell us on the form anything that will help with you talking to us – for example if you need an interpreter, or support to call.
